Do I need a passport for a cruise?

For closed-loop cruises that begin and end at the same U.S. port, a government-issued photo ID and birth certificate are often technically sufficient. We still recommend every traveler carry a passport book, since it is the only document that lets you fly home quickly if you miss the ship or need to leave the itinerary early. Any international, one-way, or repositioning cruise requires a valid passport.
