What Are the Best Caribbean Cruise Excursions?
With 80+ cruises between us including dozens of Caribbean itineraries, Trip and Cindy have done most of these excursions personally. Here's what's genuinely worth booking versus what can be skipped.
Cozumel: Snorkeling and Diving Capital of the Caribbean
Cozumel sits above the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — the second-largest barrier reef on Earth — making it the best snorkeling and diving port in the Caribbean. The reef is in excellent condition, highly protected, and accessible from shore. Top excursions: Snorkeling at Palancar Reef (two-tank snorkeling above pristine coral with visibility 50–80 feet, $80–$120 per person), scuba diving for certified divers ($120–$180 per person), Cozumel beach clubs (Mr. Sanchos, Paradise Beach — $40–$70 per person including food/drink credits), and ATV/jeep tours ($90–$140 per person). Cozumel is an easy independent port — taxis to beaches are $10–$15, and the beach clubs are high quality and affordable.
Grand Cayman: Stingray City Is Unmissable
Stingray City is one of the most unique natural experiences in the Caribbean — a shallow sandbar in the North Sound where hundreds of southern stingrays gather. Rays have been conditioned to associate boats with food for 40+ years and are completely docile. Tours wade in chest-deep water (kids can participate from the boat), and guides allow you to hold and feed the rays. Cost: $55–$85 per person, 2–3 hours. Book early — this is one of the most popular excursions in the Caribbean and sells out. Other Grand Cayman options: Seven Mile Beach (one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean, accessible by taxi for $10 each way), Hell (free, interesting local attraction), Turtle Centre ($45).
Jamaica: Adventure and Culture
Jamaica offers the Caribbean's best adventure excursions. Dunn's River Falls in Ocho Rios is a must-do: you climb a natural waterfall in a human chain with guides — genuinely fun, wet, and memorable ($40–$70, included in many cruise packages). Mystic Mountain zip-lining and bobsled in Ocho Rios ($80–$130 per person). ATV tours and river tubing in Montego Bay ($90–$150 per person). Rose Hall Great House — a colonial plantation tour with ghost legend history ($30–$50 per person). Note: Jamaica's ports require more caution with independent operators than other Caribbean destinations. Stick to cruise line excursions or highly reviewed third-party operators.
Barbados, St. Thomas, and Puerto Rico
Barbados is the Caribbean's finest all-round port for beach quality. Carlisle Bay offers calm, clear water, excellent snorkeling over sunken ships, and multiple world-class beach bars. Boatyard Beach Club ($30–$50 per person all-inclusive) is excellent value. Catamaran snorkeling tours ($75–$110 per person) cover multiple sites in 3–4 hours. St. Thomas is the Caribbean's best shopping port — no sales tax, luxury brands at significant discounts, and Charlotte Amalie is a walkable, beautiful historic town. Beach at Magens Bay ($5 entry) is justifiably famous. Puerto Rico (San Juan) offers Old San Juan — an extraordinary Spanish colonial city with 500-year-old fortresses, colorful streets, and the best Caribbean food scene. A walking tour or taxi to El Morro fortress is worth it; beaches are secondary here.
How to Build Your Excursion Strategy
Not every port needs a paid excursion. Evaluate each port individually: What are you most interested in — adventure, relaxation, culture, food, or shopping? Is this a first visit or a return? How much time does the ship spend in port? Which ports have the best independent access? Our general advice based on 80+ cruises: book paid excursions for your 2–3 most exciting ports. Use free time wisely in others — walk the town, find a local beach, visit a market. Blend cruise line and independent excursions based on destination complexity and risk tolerance. Over-scheduling excursions at every port is a common first-cruise mistake — leave room for discovery.
How many excursions should I book on a 7-day Caribbean cruise?
Most travelers are happy with 2–4 paid excursions per week-long cruise. Booking something at every port leads to exhaustion. Leave 2–3 ports for independent exploration or simple beach days.
Is snorkeling in Grand Cayman better than Cozumel?
They're different experiences. Cozumel's Palancar Reef has more diverse coral and marine life. Grand Cayman's Stingray City is more unique and interactive. If you can only choose one, Stingray City is more memorable for non-divers.
Is Jamaica safe for independent excursions?
Jamaica requires more care than other Caribbean ports. We recommend staying within resort areas, using vetted operators, and avoiding unsolicited offers from taxi drivers at the pier. The cruise line's Jamaica excursions are particularly well-vetted.
What's the best Caribbean port for shopping?
St. Thomas, USVI. No sales tax, excellent selection of jewelry, electronics, and luxury goods, and Charlotte Amalie is a beautiful setting for browsing. Cozumel's shopping area near the pier is secondary but good for silver jewelry and local crafts.
