How we compare the four main cruise cabin categories — and the rule we use to choose the right one every time

One of the first questions we hear is, "Which cruise cabin should I book?" After more than 80 cruises, Cindy and I can tell you there is no single cabin category that wins every time. We have stayed in different types of cabins, and our choice depends on the itinerary, ship, cruise length, and price difference. Here is how we compare the four main categories.

Interior cabins

Interior cabins usually offer the lowest entry price. They have no exterior window and can feel dark even in the middle of the day.

We have chosen interior cabins when the price difference allowed us to cruise more often or spend money on other parts of the vacation. That can be a very smart trade.

Oceanview cabins

Oceanview cabins include a window or porthole. The window usually does not open, but it provides natural light and an ocean view.

Before booking an oceanview cabin, compare its price with a balcony. If the difference is small, the balcony may offer better value.

Balcony cabins

A balcony cabin includes a private outdoor area with chairs and an ocean view. For many travelers, this is the cabin category that feels most like a vacation upgrade.

We enjoy balconies, but we do not automatically pay for one on every sailing. The itinerary and price difference still matter. A balcony on an Alaska cruise may add far more value than a balcony on a short itinerary with limited scenic cruising.

Suites

Suites may offer additional space, larger bathrooms, separate living areas, bigger balconies, priority services, and cruise-line perks.

Never book a suite based on the name alone. Review the square footage, floor plan, balcony size, and actual benefits.

Our cabin-selection rule

We compare four things: the total price difference, the number of nights, the itinerary, and how much time we expect to spend in the cabin. We do not pay for space we will not use. We also do not choose the lowest fare if the room could make the vacation less enjoyable. The smartest cabin is the one that fits your habits and budget.
