A side-by-side comparison of cruise-line protection programs and independent policies from Allianz and Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection
During cruise checkout you are usually offered a protection plan from the cruise line. At the same time, independent providers such as Allianz Travel Insurance and Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection sell policies that can cover the cruise plus your flights, hotels, and tours under one plan. This article compares the two approaches across the categories that matter. We do not declare one option “the best.” The right choice depends on the traveler, total trip cost, health needs, airfare, hotels, excursions, policy timing, state of residence, and desired benefits.
Premier Travelers’ two preferred independent providers are Allianz Travel Insurance and Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection. We present them as preferred providers, not as the only choices or as universally better than every competing provider.
The major cruise lines each offer a protection program. The benefits below are described as categories only; exact dollar limits depend on the current state-specific certificate, which can change. Each program was checked on the date shown.
Common traits — not universal — include: cruise-line plans can be convenient to add during booking; some may focus mainly on costs purchased through the cruise line; some lines include a non-insurance cancellation feature that provides a future cruise credit for certain cancellations not covered by the insurance portion; airfare, hotels, tours, or transfers booked outside the cruise line may require separate protection or receive different treatment; medical and evacuation limits vary widely; state-specific certificates can change coverage; and cruise-line programs may be administered or underwritten by outside insurance companies.
A future cruise credit is not the same as a cash insurance reimbursement. A credit gives you a future sailing; cash reimbursement returns money you can spend anywhere. Some lines offer both, for different situations.
Allianz Travel Insurance offers plans that may cover cruises, flights, hotels, and other prepaid travel arrangements under one policy. OneTrip plans cover individual vacations; AllTrips annual multi-trip plans cover eligible trips taken during the 365-day policy period. Benefits typically include trip cancellation and interruption, emergency medical benefits, emergency transportation, travel delay, and baggage benefits. Optional cancellation upgrades are available on eligible plans. Time-sensitive requirements apply to certain pre-existing-condition benefits. Coverage and limits vary by plan and state.
Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection (BHTP) offers single-trip choices: WaveCare cruise-focused coverage, ExactCare plan choices, and LuxuryCare for higher-cost trips. Benefits typically include trip cancellation and interruption, emergency medical treatment, medical evacuation, missed connections, and travel and baggage delays. Pre-existing-condition provisions may depend on purchase timing, and optional Cancel For Any Reason benefits are available on eligible plans. BHTP’s website states it does not offer annual multi-trip plans. Coverage varies by plan, timing, and state.
The table below compares the two approaches across the categories that matter. “Varies” means the figure depends on the plan, state, or certificate and should be confirmed from the current official document. No exact dollar limits are published here unless verified from a current official source.
These are traveler examples, not personal recommendations. The right choice depends on the specifics of your trip and your state of residence.
