Annual Travel Insurance for Frequent Cruisers: Is One Policy Enough? — Premier Travelers

How annual multi-trip coverage works, when it may or may not make sense for frequent cruisers, and how it compares to single-trip plans

If you sail several times a year — or mix cruises with flights, resorts, and road trips — an annual multi-trip travel insurance plan can look like a simpler alternative to buying a separate policy for every trip. Sometimes it is. Sometimes one large cruise still needs its own single-trip policy. This article explains how annual multi-trip coverage works and when it may or may not make sense for frequent cruisers. It is general travel information, not insurance advice; coverage decisions should be based on your needs and the applicable policy documents.

Annual Multi-Trip vs. Single-Trip Coverage

A single-trip policy covers one defined trip, from the departure date to the return date, with a trip cost you declare when you buy. An annual multi-trip plan covers eligible trips you take during a 365-day policy period. Instead of buying a new policy each time, you insure the year, and each qualifying trip is covered subject to the plan’s rules.

How an Annual Plan Works

Eligibility depends on age, residence, trip length, and the selected plan. Always compare your most expensive planned trip against the annual plan’s trip-cancellation limit before assuming one policy is enough.

Why One Large Cruise May Still Need a Single-Trip Plan

The most common reason an annual plan is not enough is the trip-cancellation limit. If your annual plan caps trip cancellation at a lower amount and you have one expensive sailing — a world cruise, an extended luxury itinerary, or a suite with prepaid airfare and hotels — the annual plan may not cover the full prepaid cost of that one trip. In that case, a frequent cruiser often keeps an annual plan for everyday trips and buys a separate single-trip policy for the one large cruise. Compare your highest single-trip cost against the annual plan’s limit before deciding.

Allianz Annual Plans

Allianz Travel Insurance currently offers AllTrips annual plans for eligible travelers. AllTrips tiers differ in per-trip length limits, trip-cancellation limits, emergency medical and emergency transportation benefits, and optional add-ons. We do not publish exact limits here unless verified from the current plan documents and accompanied by the plan name, state assumptions, the date checked, and a statement that terms may change. Coverage and limits vary by plan and state. Check the current Allianz plan documents for your state before purchase.

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection (BHTP) currently offers single-trip choices, including cruise-focused WaveCare, ExactCare, and LuxuryCare. Its website states it does not offer an annual plan. A frequent traveler may still compare separate BHTP policies for each trip against an Allianz annual plan. This is not a direct recommendation — it is a comparison a frequent cruiser can make for their own trip mix.

Annual Plan Examples to Think Through

A Worksheet for Your Own Trips

Use this worksheet to gather the facts before you compare plans. It does not calculate or recommend a policy automatically.

Once you have these facts, compare your highest single-trip cost against the annual plan’s trip-cancellation limit, and compare the annual plan’s cost against the total of separate single-trip policies for the same trips. The right answer depends on your numbers, your state, and the current plan documents.
